Craft time for Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

Craft time for Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

Every 15th of day of the 8th month according to the Chinese Lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the second next grandest festival after Chinese New Year in China. Countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea also celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival as well.

What is Mid-Autumn Festival?
Nowadays, people relate to it as Thanksgiving day where friends and families will gather to enjoy the moon at its roundest and brightest on this day which symbolises harmony and unity. Children get to play with candles and lanterns (ah…the time when children are allowed to play with “fire” but under strong supervision).

Food
Mooncakes are a big part of this celebration. Traditionally, it is filled with lotus seed or sweet bean paste. With creativity coming up from the new generation, more flavours and designed are being created. Generally, the yolk of an egg is baked inside the cake to represent the moon. As people are getting more health conscious nowadays, there are those that comes without the yolk and are less sweet.

Legend
If you do an internet search, there are many legends and stories related to this grand festival. The most well-known ones include the jade rabbit that lived on the moon with the lady called Chang Er.

During this occasion, my grandparents will always tell me to look up at the moon because during this period you will get to see both of the rabbit and lady smiling down at you. Every year, I did the same to smarties as well and they will look hard at the moon searching for the rabbit and the lady. Believe it or not, you can give it a try.

After going through the history of the festival, we did a simple and fun craft while munching on a mooncake so as to have a better understand of the occasion. Mei mei was having a great time learning and sharing what she did.

Here’s what you need for the crafts. Items can be easily found at home. As for the colouring pages, you can search on the internet (forgot which link I got it from as I was doing a random search).
